The Art We Wear

Upon meeting someone for the first time, it never fails that I am asked how Avery Peace got its start….. My inspiration for Avery Peace began in a not unusual way: it started with my own needs – that is to say that I found myself wanting something which did not exist. I was having endless visions of precious, sparkling, tattoos dancing around in my head!  Although I am ink-less myself, I find I really respond to the resonance of tattoos – their ability to send messages, to hold secrets. I’m a big believer in the power of words and the touchstone quality of symbols- I think that’s what it comes down to. I wanted to flesh out these notions with this first collection of jewelry, and so I set out to create literally precious, meaningful, and wearable language.

To me, it was the most natural thing to give these ideas wings with the language and symbolism of yoga.  I have practiced yoga for many, many years, and now I teach as well.  There is such richness in Sanskrit, and such beauty in the Devanagari script, that I have never found myself at a loss for inspiration with “the language of the gods.”  Sanskrit is an ancient language many consider divine.  Woven throughout its long and sacred history are beautiful threads that reach us today.  In its antiquity, ironically, we are able to find fresh ways to artfully communicate with this remarkable world we share.
